What is PL?
In simple terms, “physical literacy is the foundation for life-long participation of individuals in physical activities.” It can be observed in an individual’s motivation to engage in physical activities with confidence and enjoy participating in these activities. It can be seen in their understanding of the value of physical activities, the knowledge to diversify in their physical movements; their competence to perform physical activities, build self-esteem and self-confidence through participation; and an overall positive outlook toward physical activities throughout their life. Ultimately, physical literacy taps into the natural expression of individual human potential and lays the foundation for a happy and healthy future by enabling both individuals and communities.
As per the International Physical Literacy Association (IPLA), “As appropriate to each individual’s endowment, physical literacy is the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding to value and take responsibility for engagement in physical activities for life.”
The knowledge of physical literacy expands our understanding beyond just the physical aspects of human body and offers a new perspective about the behavioural aspects (affective, cognitive)
